Data Lake For Unparalleled Insights

Project Objective

We designed and built a managed data lake using the Apache Hadoop Distributed File System (HDFS) and the Hortonworks Data Platform (HDP). The data lake provides our client with a comprehensive view of consumer behavior, allowing them to make more informed decisions about their business.

Challenges

  • The data can be difficult to manage and keep track of when it comes from multiple sources. Different departments or teams might have their own way of storing and tracking their data, which can lead to confusion and inconsistency.
  • A centralised location for storing all the data, regardless of its source or format, is needed in order to eliminate data silos and determine ways to connect enterprise data.
  • Need to derive insights from data to help open new avenues for growth by enhancing decision-making.

The Solution

The success of the data lake implementation at the company hinged on the capability to ingest data from a variety of sources in any format. This was made possible through the development of a single integrated environment based on Hadoop, which enabled the data lake with managed ingestion.

All the data was defined, tracked, and logged in this platform, which allowed for a unified view and analysis of data from various sources, including point-of-sale, digital marketing, e-commerce, and mail subscriptions. In addition, orchestration and job scheduling capabilities were developed to consume, process, or act upon the data. Finally, traditional BI tools were integrated with the data lake for reporting purposes.

The analytics were able to provide detailed insights into consumer behavior which helped the company make more informed strategic decisions.

Business Impact

50% reduction in cost in both storage and data processing.

Analytics has been critical in informing strategic decision-making across multiple business functions. The insights delivered have helped to optimise operations, identify new areas of opportunity, and understand customer behavior in greater depth. The organization is now looking to expand its use of data analytics to further improve performance.
